On 22nd February 2018, we got together with RHB Securities to present “ValueEdge 2018”.
Investors saw generally positive results when investing in 2017. What would things look like for investors in 2018 and beyond? Those were some of the questions that were discussed and answered at ValueEdge 2018.
We are privileged to have enjoyed a longstanding partnership with RHB Securities over the years. 2017 was yet another incredible year for them, seeing how they bagged more than a handful of awards including Best Analyst for Small-Mid Cap companies and Consumer Staples, as well as awards for Best Team awards for research and analysis. We are proud to be working with one of the industry’s finest, to bring good quality investing presentations and events to the public.
Tay Jun Hao kicked off the evening’s proceedings with a recap of 2017.
Riding on a successful 2017 at the Heritage Global Capital Fund, Jun Hao shared with the audience some of his best investment ideas as well as specific areas where he saw the most risk.
Recalling real-life examples from economically challenging times in 2016, Jun Hao demonstrated how he was able to identify areas of opportunity in trying times, which enabled him to achieve market-beating returns over the last 2 years. Using the same investment framework, he shared with the audience his views on the investment opportunities that 2017 presented for investors in 2018.
The Capital Cycle
Goh Tee Leng then took the stage to speak about the Capital Cycle. Tee Leng shared about the concept of the Capital Cycle and how it was able to help him achieve market-beating returns for his investors at the Heritage Global Capital Fund,
The audience listened intently as he shared with them how the Capital Cycle was able to help him identify compelling investment opportunities and also how it is able to help him avoid Value-Traps. The audience got to hear first-hand how “buying low and selling high” is easy in principle, but a lot harder to execute in reality, and how Tee Leng is able to make not just good investment decisions, but great ones.
Comprising of mostly active investors, the audience got to see first-hand how Tee Leng apply his investment framework, where he showed a real-life example of how he is able to systematically identify the better of 2 companies.
Investment Opportunities in 2018
After a short break, Tay Jun Hao took the stage again to speak about what was arguably the highlight of the night – Investment opportunities in 2018.
Jun Hao shared his views about the Singapore market and how it has recovered since darker days in 2016. He shared some unique perspectives that allowed him to stay ahead of the game, as well as some examples on sectors and areas he was looking at. Equally captivating for the audience was his thoughts on sectors and areas where he felt investors should avoid.
The audience got more than what they asked for when Jun Hao shared about some of his investment ideas in the Hong Kong markets. As one of the key markets he invests in at the Heritage Global Capital Fund, his ideas were well-received, but even more so was his fundamental analysis of the characteristics of the Hong Kong market. The audience was able to learn about how to invest in the Hong Kong market from an effective and experienced perspective.
Question and Answer Segment
After 2 hours of value-packed content, the audience was brimming with questions. Jun Hao and Tee Leng sat on the panel for the final Question and Answer segment, which was moderated by Xavier See.
Among some of the questions raised were:
- What gives Jun Hao and Tee Leng and edge in their investments?
- How can investors prepare for the long-run in Singapore?
- Key challenges coming up for Singapore in the long-run.
- How the Singapore Budget will affect investment activities locally and globally
- Why Property may not be a good investment for the long term right now.
- What to expect in a low interest rate environment and areas of caution
- How can investors make the most of 2018
Many good questions were asked and many good answers were given over a candid, laughter-filled Q&A session which overran by 10 minutes.
